The Speakers of the Earth series begins with Volume One, The Fireweed Entrance. This is the story of a man named Ray Holdman, who is blessed (and more to the point, he believes, cursed) with the innate, uncontrollable ability to communicate in the most intimate and baffling ways with trees.
The main problem with this is that he cannot control this ‘gift’, and his unpredictable behavior tends to frighten people into believing he is psychotic and likely dangerous. By the age of 35, the life of an unknowable outcast has gotten very old, indeed.
After the latest in a never ending series of strange, often public encounters with a new tree and his subsequent run-in with the law, Ray meets an old man who is not quite a vagrant, not quite respectable, and more than a little mysterious. He convinces Ray to leave town and travel to the deep ranges of Mount Rainier, to “ask some questions, and listen for some answers.” From there, things begin to get complicated…
